Making Progress on Puget Sound: Fact Sheet 2008
Two years ago, The Alliance for Puget Sound Shorelines, a local collaboration between The Nature Conservancy, The Trust for Public Land, People For Puget Sound embarked on an ambitious plan to create 10 new parks, restore 100 miles of shoreline and protect 1000 miles of shoreline by 2009 as part of the sweeping statewide effort to restore the troubled Sound by 2020. The Alliance has made significant progress towards these goals, and is hard at work to complete them on schedule. Here’s a brief update on our progress so far:
Create 10 Parks and Natural Areas
- Three projects are complete at Tarboo-Dabob Bay, Pilot Point and Taylor Bay.
- Eight other potential sites have been identified.
Restore 100 Miles of Shoreline
- Restoration is complete on nearly 38 miles of shoreline.
- Over 36 miles of restoration is underway, and approximately 69 additional miles have been identified.
Enhance Protection on 1,000 Miles of Shoreline
- The Alliance has enhanced policies directly protecting 872 miles of shoreline.
- All 872 miles now have a 100 foot buffer on all shoreline development.
Engaging the Public and Partners
- The MudUp campaign welcomes the participation of Puget Sound residents big and small in cleanup and restoration efforts. See http://www.mudup.org for details.
- The Alliance partners with numerous organizations, including the Puget Sound Partnership, on all acquisition, restoration and conservation projects.
