Mud Monster, what’s up with the green hair? Do you dye that with Manic Panic, or what? —Random Hipster Dude

Mud Monster, what’s up with the green hair? Do you dye that with Manic Panic, or what? —Random Hipster Dude

Isn't it beautiful?

Dye? Never! I am an all-natural kind of monster! My hair is made of eelgrass, an important part of the shoreline ecosystem. Eelgrass is a beautiful bright green plant that grows in shallow bays and estuaries. It's a haven for crabs, scallops, numerous species of fish, and many other forms of wildlife, providing these creatures with habitat, nursery grounds, and food.  Eelgrass is often covered with tiny marine plants and animals, who enjoy the shelter and protection of its long and graceful blades. Eelgrass used to be abundant around my beloved Puget Sound, but because of pollution, overdevelopment, and industrialization, much of the eelgrass along the entire Pacific coast has been destroyed.

But I digress. Shall I tell you more about my hair? I like to wash it with a cold water rinse at the very end. I feel that this seals the cuticle and brings out a delightful shine. But I must mention here that I take extremely short showers to conserve water, and I only use natural shampoo. Always thinking about the Sound, you know? What goes down the drain eventually ends up in there!

As for you, Random Hipster Dude, I would recommend henna as an environmentally-friendly alternative to those toxic dyes. Natural is the new unnatural — haven't you heard?
