Fantastic Volunteer Turnout to Help Clean Up Lake Union Fireworks (July 5th)
July 5th fireworks and festivities leave a mess in Lake Union, but volunteers help restore the lake to its former state.

Man Removes debris from Lake Union
The beautiful fourth of July fireworks display over Lake Union leaves quite a bit of leftover trash floating in the waters below. But an amazing turnout of 30 volunteers arrived early the day after the big event to help gather the debris from the water. On sunny July 5th these vivacious volunteers boarded kayaks and the SoundKeeper boat to patrol the lake. Thanks to their efforts, 20 bags worth of fireworks debris and garbage were removed from Lake Union. Imagine what the lake would look like if no one had shown up to help that day!
This event was sponsored by the Puget SoundKeeper Alliance and One Reel. Good deeds can be contagious, and according to SoundKeeper Chris, the best moment of the event occurred when “A sailboat owner in a marina saw what we were doing and grabbed a net to help. She was able to snare two bags worth of fireworks debris from amongst the boats on her dock.” Thank you, random sailboat owner!
A special thanks goes to One Reel for supporting a cleanup of the WaMu family Fourth fireworks event they helped promote, and of course to the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance for spearheading the event.
