Johns Island CrabTalk Awes Crowd

Dr. Kristen Holsman and Dr. Sean McDonald, crab experts, talk for two hours about their favorite shelled delight, Dungeness crab.

Dr. Kristen Holsman shows off a Dungeness crab to Johns Islanders

Johns Island, WA Sat July 7th
Jim Syck's Cabin

"Around 20 folks walked down the beach to Jim's cabin to hear Dr. Kirstin Holsman and Dr. Sean McDonald, crab experts, talk for two hours about their favorite shelled delight, Dungeness crab. Attendees learned about where crab live, what they eat, how they reproduce, where they go, and of course how to best catch them! Dr. Holsman has studied Dungeness crab for over 8 years, and talked with Johns islanders about the importance of open mud-flats to the thousands of "teenage" crab that migrate onto the flats at high-tide to forage on worms and clams. Dr. McDonald brought frozen specimens of the invasive European Green crab, which he has studied for the last 10 years, and talked about the impacts of the invader on our coasts, how to identify them and whether they will ever show up on the beaches of the San Juan Islands. After hours of questions and answers the sunny group departed knowing everything you'd ever want to know about those crazy crustaceans, our friends the Crabs!" -- Dr. Kristen Holsman
