Mission Creek Pocket Estuary Earth Month Ivy Pull
Our last South Sound Earth Month event, our Mission Creek Pocket Estuary Ivy Pull was a great success.
Our last South Sound Earth Month event, our Mission Creek Pocket Estuary Ivy Pull was a great success. This pocket estuary is one of many critical links in shoreline habitat for salmon and other shoreline using species but it has been degraded by past road building and invasive species. We started turning back the tide to restore this site on our last South Sound Earth Month event.
We had a total of 64 (55 volunteers) people on Saturday and another 56 (54 volunteers) on Sunday. We had several great partners on this event including the The Nature Conservancy, South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group, City of Olympia, and Marshall Middle School. Our new group of South Sound Stewards was a great help in organizing and leading the events-Sharon, Aleia, Colleen (an honorary Steward!), Dwight (another honorary!), Jessica, Jeff, and Ali. The one hundred volunteers who gave up their weekend learned a bit about shoreline habitat and made a mighty contribution to its restoration. If we include our other events this month, we had 135 volunteers working on the shoreline, 75 people learning about Puget Sound biota at our Pier Peer, and 15 people in our Sound Steward training.
