July 14th - Over 25 folks gathered at Fay Bainbridge State Park to walk the eelgrass beds during one of the lowest tides of the summer. Dr. Kirstin Holsman and her husband Dr. Sean McDonald led the beachwalk and talked to the crowd about the importance of eelgrass beds as habitats for numerous marine species. The inquisitive group found cockles, mussels, seastars, moonsnails, polychaetes, and crabs and learned about the unique strategies each of these animals has adopted to survive and reproduce in the fluctuating environment of the intertidal beach. Most of the attendees were not members and had heard about the beachwalk from the local paper. After the walk they spent some time reviewing the People For Puget Sound display and learning about how they could get involved in cleaning up Puget Sound.
