Alliance for Puget Sound Shorelines Receives $20,000 Contribution from Wells Fargo
MudUp! Campaign to Engage the Public in the Puget Sound Cleanup Matches Wells Fargo Goal to Engage its Banking Customers in Cleaning up the Environment
Safeco Field, Seattle Sep 13, 2007SEATTLE – September 13, 2007 – The Alliance for Puget Sound Shorelines announced today that it has received a $20,000 contribution from Wells Fargo in Washington to help support its MudUp campaign to help restore and protect Puget Sound.
“We are grateful for Wells Fargo’s contribution to MudUp and Puget Sound,” said John Daly of the Alliance for Puget Sound Shorelines. “They are going the extra mile in helping their customers find ways to be a part of this historic effort to clean up Puget Sound.”
The three founding groups that make up the Alliance for Puget Sound Shorelines – The Nature Conservancy, People for Puget Sound and The Trust for Public Land – developed MudUp to engage the public in a new innovative way in the effort to restore Puget Sound. Wells Fargo will encourage its customers to get their hands dirty in saving the Sound by visiting the MudUp campaign online (www.MudUp.org).
“We hear from our customers, team members and our communities, that protecting the environment is important to them,” said Patrick Yalung, regional president for Wells Fargo in Washington. “Through the MudUp campaign, the Alliance for Puget Sound Shorelines is providing opportunities for the public to make positive environmental changes while having fun at the same time. We are excited about being a part of that effort.”
Wells Fargo will present the check to MudUp at the Seattle Mariner’s game today. The Mud Monster, the MudUp campaign mascot, will be on hand to receive the jumbo check and will do his best to compete with the Mariner Moose for the love and affection of Mariner’s fans. We hope so…they are “brothers” after all, both having been created by the same designer, Susan Min.
The Mud Monster has been appearing at various public and private events around the Sound since the beginning of the summer to help build public awareness about the plight of the Sound, the need for everyone to get their hands dirty in helping to restore it, and to mobilize people to visit www.MudUp.org to find a Puget Sound event and activity that suits their “preferred level of dirtiness,” from guided walks to weed pulls. The message is that everyone has a stake in the future of the Sound and there are hundreds of ways for people to help…and have fun while they are at it.
Additionally, the Mud Monster will be on hand for Shred Day events hosted by Wells Fargo throughout the Puget Sound in October. Shred Day events provide a safe, secure and environmentally responsible way to help people dispose of personal and confidential documents.
At year-end 2006, Wells Fargo was the largest purchaser of renewable energy in the United States according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership program. More than 40 percent of Wells Fargo’s electricity, nationwide, is offset with wind power. The Company supports the development of new renewable energy sources through financing and other investments. To conserve energy Wells Fargo has aggressive energy efficiency measures in its own facilities and is a leading financer of green, LEED certified, buildings.
The Alliance for Puget Sound Shorelines has set a goal of creating ten new parks, restoring 100 miles of shoreline and protecting 1,000 miles of shoreline by June, 2009. www.MudUp.org lists activities that the public can take part in to help the Alliance get to its goal, as well as a myriad of other ways that the public can enjoy the Sound and contribute to its recovery.
